Pasture quality is declining, how do we ensure our livestock continue to meet their production needs

As the season warms up and soil moisture continues to drop, the pasture quality is declining. Careful monitoring to ensure livestock are in the right condition is critical now, particularly when preparing for joining to make sure they reach their productive potential. 

Presented by nutrition and livestock specialist Hamish Dickson, and covering: 

• Condition scoring and measuring livestock production 

• Setting and achieving livestock production targets 

• Matching pastures with livestock requirements- and how do we manipulate this? 

• Planning for the season ahead

Facilitated by our local Northern and Yorke NRM staff, this half day session will provide an overview of weed management principles and the knowledge required to plan and implement effective weed management.

Chris Brodie, SA Herbarium will cover:

·              Weedy and emerging ‘ALERT’ grasses

·              Buffel and needle grass

·              How to get weeds identified for management purposes, bring a weed for a quick ID!

·              Practical ‘pressing and recording’ plants session

Hamish Dickson, Agri Partner Consulting Principal Livestock Consultant will cover:

·              Weeds in pasture identification

·              Consideration of active growth period and matching livestock needs

·              Nutritional value of grazing weeds and grasses
